Directors

Band Directors

Yvonne Daye

Band Director

Ms. Yvonne M. Daye is a Band Director at Hickory High School in Chesapeake, VA. She previously served as the Director of Bands at Maury High School, Assistant Director of the Norfolk All City Jazz Band. Ms. Daye earned her Master’s in Music Education with an emphasis in conducting from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA and Bachelor’s of Music from Virginia Commonwealth University. Prior to her tenure as an educator, Ms. Daye worked for Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma’s National Headquarters focusing on Chapter and Colony Education, Risk Management, and Leadership Development.

 

During her time at ODU, she served as Graduate Assistant for the Monarch Athletic Bands. As a conducting student, Ms. Daye studied techniques, literature, and conducting pedagogy under Mr. Dennis Zeisler and guest conducted the ODU Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band. Her work with the Monarch Athletic Bands included engaging student leadership and worked as a technician to facilitate the learning marching band music and drill. While at VCU she performed at Carnegie Hall, the Virginia Music Educators Association, Virginia-All State Band and Orchestra Clinic, and the 2011 American Bandmasters Association Conference. She has performed in various ensembles across the country that include world premieres of works by Adam Gorb, John Mackey, Julie Giroux, and Stephen Bryant.

 

Ms. Daye is a member of the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association, Women Band Directors International, National Association for Music Education, Black Women Band Directors, National Band Association, Minority Band Directors National Association, and Pi Kappa Lambda. Ms. Daye is also a Life Member of Kappa Kappa Psi, alumnae of Sigma Alpha Iota and holds Honorary Membership of Tau Beta Sigma. 

Mitchell Reed

Band Director

A native of Gloucester, Virginia, is in his fifth year as Band Director at Hickory High School in Chesapeake.

Prior to his appointment at Hickory, Mr. Reed served as the Director of Bands at Joe E. Newsome High School in Tampa, Florida. During his three-year tenure, the program’s three concert bands, marching band, jazz ensemble, and percussion ensemble earned consecutive Superior ratings. Under his direction, the Newsome Band grew to over 200 students, becoming one of the largest and most comprehensive programs in the region. The program featured premier WGI Indoor Percussion and two Winter Guards, which were perennial favorites in the FFCC and WGI circuits. Professionally, Mr. Reed served as the Hillsborough All-County Band Chairperson and was selected as an All-State Honor Band Coordinator.

Mr. Reed began his teaching career as the Director of Bands at West Point Middle and High School in Virginia. Six years teaching grades 6–12, he introduced several new ensembles and guided the program to its first-ever Virginia Honor Band designation. Mr. Reed was honored to be named both the West Point High School and West Point Public Schools Teacher of the Year.

During his graduate studies, Mr. Reed served as a Graduate Teaching Assistant for the University of South Florida band program. In this capacity, he taught undergraduate courses in music education, instrument methods, and conducting, while serving as a conductor for the USF Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, and the 350-member "Herd of Thunder" Marching Band. Mr. Reed has performed internationally in Beijing, London, and across North America and studied with renowned Yamaha performing artist Rex Richardson, Dr. Matthew McCutchen, Dr. Terry Austin and Dr. John Carmichael. 

 

Mr. Reed holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Master’s Degree in Instrumental Conducting from the University of South Florida. Mr. Reed enjoys golfing and spending time with his wife Mindee, daughter Ella Mae and their dog, Kala. 

Derick Johnson

Percussion Director

Innovative Percussion

Derick Johnson, a native of Newport News, Virginia, is currently in his eighth year of teaching at Crestwood Middle School in Chesapeake, Virginia. Before his tenure as a middle school director, Mr. Johnson spent two years as a general music and orchestra teacher at the elementary school level. Under his leadership at Crestwood Middle School, the band has consistently achieved superior and excellent ratings at state concert band festivals. In recognition of his exceptional teaching abilities and unwavering dedication to his students, Mr. Johnson was honored with the prestigious title of Crestwood Middle School’s Teacher of the Year in 2023. Mr. Johnson holds both his Bachelor’s and Master's degrees in Music Education from Hampton University. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he is an esteemed educator, clinician, and arranger for various percussion ensembles throughout the United States. He currently serves as the Director of Percussion at Hickory High School, where he instructs the front ensemble, percussion ensemble, and winter drum line.
